Metal is a roofing option that’s gained popularity over the past few years. As time goes by, numerous homeowners have made or are considering making the switch to metal roofs. However, as appealing and durable as these roofing materials are, they can be quite tricky to install, especially for a roofing contractor who hasn’t gotten their feet wet. This emphasizes the importance of working with seasoned contractors who specialize in home roof replacements. Otherwise, your roof could run into problems early on, shortening its lifespan.

In today’s blog, Armor Exteriors shares four common mistakes that rookie contractors commit when installing a metal roofing system.
1. Passing On Basic Preparation. Whether the contractor is new or seasoned, they should always follow some basic preparation procedures to lay the groundwork of the entire metal roofing project. To ensure everything runs smoothly, your contractor has to measure your roof’s length and slope before cutting the metal panels to be installed. Sometimes, inexperienced contractors forget to make these preparations and start cutting panels without taking the proper measurements. This can result in jagged edges and oversized panels, leading to rust and premature deterioration.
2. Faulty Fastener Installation. A rookie roofing and exterior siding contractor can install your fastener incorrectly in three ways: by making them off-center, overtightening them or under-tightening them. Any of these three mistakes will result in leaks and fastener loosening, which can lead to costly repairs down the road.
3. Applying Insufficient Coating. Metal roofs consist of galvalume or galvanized steel, both of which are materials that can easily corrode and rust due to water and other liquid-based pollutants from rain showers
4. Wavy Panels. If your roofing contractor uses the wrong standing seam panel, the metal roof might look like its wavy. This is also known as oil canning, and it can make your metal roofing system look cheap and unkempt. To prevent oil canning, an experienced metal roofer will use the standing seam panel appropriate for your home and climate.
